Summer Road Trip in Iceland: 9 Days Itinerary

I just came back from an E.P.I.C trip to Iceland and oh boy… I fell in love with the beautiful country and her horses. Yes, you saw it right – I love the Icelandic horses! Summer is a great time of the year for a road trip in Iceland as the weather is lovely (temperatures around 12 deg celsius in the day) and there’s a great advantage of SUPER LONG daylight. Got carried away and ran overtime on the road? No worries about nightfall, there’s virtually 24 hours of daylight!

Iceland has always been a land of mystery to me. I live in the far east and I’ve never heard much about this island near the arctic circle other than the infamous Icelandic financial crisis and Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption in 2010 which spewed so much ash and choked the European airspace.

Thanks to my sister who diligently scoured through many websites and planned our trip, we managed to get the following 9 days itinerary in place. I’ll be writing a series of posts to share more on our summer travels in Iceland, hence this is a prelude of what is to come 🙂

Day 1: London Gatwick airport to Reykjavik Keflavik airport on WOW Airline

Day 2: Reykjavik chill out in the city (Harpa) and shopping (Laugavegur & Kringlan shopping mall)

Day 3: Horse riding and Blue Lagoon

Day 4: Road trip – Golden Circle (Þingvellir National Park, snorkeling at the Silfra Rift, Geysir & Gulfoss waterfall)

Day 5: Road trip – West Iceland Snæfellsnes peninsular (we tried to follow Grayline’s itinerary :P) (Borganes, Gerduberg Basalt Column, Olkelda Mineral Spring, Anarstapi, Snæfellsjökull, Olafsvik)

Day 6: Reykjavik chill out at Kolaportið Flea Market and sea angling at Faxaflói Bay

Day 7: Road trip – Reykjavik to Southern Iceland Vik (Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Eyjafjallajökull volcano, Skogafoss waterfall, Dyrhólaey, Reynisfjara black volcanic rock beach & basalt columns, Vik)

Day 8: Road trip – Southeast Iceland Vatnajökull National Park area (Skaftafell Skaftafellsjökull glacier, Fjallsárlón glacial lagoon, Jökulsárlón glacial lake)

Day 9: Drive from Vik back to Reykjavik Keflavik airport for flight back to London

For the above itinerary, we stayed in AirBNB apartments at Reykjavik from Days 1 to 6; Vik from Days 7 to 9. Transport wise, we rented a 4WD Toyota Land Cruiser. (I will be providing more information on renting cars and driving in Iceland in separate posts.)
